Green Economy and Energy Transition: A Global Challenge, A Nordic - EFTA - Truly European Response The world’s hunger for electricity is insatiable. Every nation, every economy, every life depends on it. But what shall sustain this need? Not fossil fuels - if we are to uphold our commitment to the Paris Agreement. Not nuclear power alone - if we acknowledge its high costs, extended timelines, and complex risks. The answer lies in renewables, deployed with urgency, scale, and unwavering commitment. Switzerland has codified its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal by 2050, enshrined in the Climate and Innovation Act approved by voters on June 18, 2023. Iceland, with its vast geothermal and hydropower resources has the potential to electrify the continent. Greenland, the first and only indigenous land and nation to sign the Paris Agreement, possesses vast hydropower reserves and a wealth of critical materials essential for the decarbonized economy. But potential alone is not enough. Transformation demands action- investment, infrastructure, and bold policy and political choices that will define our century.
A Renewable Vision Demands Responsibility Every energy source leaves a mark. Even renewables reshape landscapes, impact ecosystems, and alter lives. Transitioning to green power is not enough - it must be done wisely, equitably, and with a commitment to those affected. We must not extract without restoring. We must not build without compensating. The Norður vision is built on this foundation: a just transition where environmental integrity and social justice are non-negotiable.
The Future Is Not a Distant Prospect - It Is Now The energy transition is not coming; it is here. It is in every wind turbine that rises, every solar panel installed, every hydropower station built, every geothermal well tapped, and every kilometre of transmission cable laid beneath the ocean. It is in the choices we make today - and in the consequences of inaction.
More than ever, it is the time to move beyond rhetoric and into action, beyond aspirations and into implementation.
