Concept

«The Nordur vision seeks to promote a beneficial cooperation for the EFTA member states, the Nordics and Switzerland in the field of renewable energies.»

We do not wait for the future to arrive - we build it. The energy transition is not a hypothetical challenge for the distant horizon; it is a present reality, unfolding with or without us. The Norður Association exists to ensure that the nations of EFTA - Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland - are not merely participants but leaders. Our approach is grounded in pragmatism, innovation, and the fierce determination to act:

  • Public-Private Synergy – We bridge the divide between government initiatives and private investment, ensuring that financial flows are directed toward impactful, scalable solutions.
  • Inform & Advocate – We illuminate and integrate the entire renewable energy value chain, from the extraction of necessary raw materials to the end of life of renewable energy infrastructure, ensuring that policymakers, industries, and civil society grasp both the risks and the opportunities.
  • Policy & Frameworks - We push for binding agreements between EFTA member states, aligning them with the broader European strategy for renewables, energy security, reduction of strategic dependencies in the decarbonization’s material value chains, and full-scale decarbonization.
  • Knowledge Exchange  - We forge partnerships between research institutions, industry leaders, and decision-makers to catalyse technological breakthroughs and systemic change.

At the heart of our early ambitions was a bold vision: a Swiss participation in Icelink - a HVDC (high-voltage direct current) link bridging Iceland and mainland Europe - a tangible artery of clean energy, spanning the sea. In the mid-2010s, this vision proved premature. Has its time come? Or would alternative energy carriers - green hydrogen or synthetic fuels-  ammonia for fertilisers offer a more feasible pathway? Perhaps, the key lies in shifting energy-intensive industries, such as data centres, directly to the power source. We are not here to cling to just one idea. We are here to discover what works.

Beyond electricity, our mission has expanded. With the successful launch of Swiss Green Gas International Ltd., a direct result of Norður’s efforts, we now advance the next frontier: the unprecedented  scale up of renewables and guaranteeing that we have the materials to build and operate a decarbonized economy. These are not distant technologies - they are integral to the next chapter of our transition, already unfolding.
